Falling Waters 3

When the snow starts to melt on the mountain tops, the waters fall -- out of the rocks on the side of the mountain. It is exhilatating to witness the explosion of water gushing over the rocks. I tried to get the feeling of the force of nature this can be, I use a palette knife to move a lot of paint on the canvas. This is an oil painting -- 36 x 24 $2600

Oil Painting 16 x 20 $850

This painting was started on-site at the Lawn and Garden Show in March, 09, as a demonstration. I was working with the near-by display of hanging baskets of ferns, gourds, birdhouses and other hanging plants. The painting then sat in my studio for about 8 months with unresolved areas. I was invited to show my work at a Fall Festival at Neumeier's Nursery in October and with the atmosphere there, painiting plein-air and talking with people about my work, I was able to finish this piece, including the silouettes of two figures. This is a very festive Festival.

Red and Blue Fusions III

I often use strong complimentary color schemes for my paintings. For this one I started with orange/reds and blue/greens and watched as the colors evolved toward the greens and yellows. I had painted a study of a woman in a wild print mumu type of dress and her clothing was the initial inspirition for this color scheme. You never know where the inspirition will come from -- you need to be open to new ideas. Even the angular shape came from her clothing.

Sometimes the abstracts become a recognizable scene. I started this with a thick layer of various blues applied with a palette knife. I placed the circle in a yellow orange for contrast and it was an Atlantic Coast seascape. Add a little water shimmer and a lighthouse. Done.

This is the first of the paintings from the music of Rodrigo and Gabriela. Red, Red, Red and more red. I kept having the name Al Hambra come to me as I was painting, so I looked it up and it translates as "the red house".

Blue Flamenco

I have been captivated by the flamenco music since I was a child. When living in CT we went to a performence of dancers in NY city. It made a lasting impression. This is the second painting I have done to the music of Rodrigo and Gabriela. with about a month between these two attempts to show that action in paint.

This is the first figure to appear, unplanned, I see a figure walking away, wrapped in a blanket and holding a walking stick. Others see a horse and rider -- I can't find that - but maybe you can. I enjoy the music of Carlos Nakai, who plays a Native American flute and chants. Several of his CDs combine his music with people from other cultures.

This painting has risen from the ashes several times. Truly a continuum. I started with Mozart but had to switch to jazz as it developed. The forms started round and flowing, but I needed to add the structure of the squares and rectangles, just a little off-kilter, like jazz.

I was listening to Eric Clapton Unplugged, painting in a very quiet mood. As this guitar started to take shape, looking lonely, stuck in a corner, I thought of my son taking lessons when he was 12, learning on his Gibson acoustic. I wonder where it is now? Stuck in a corner of his closet? Does he bring it out to play for his children? Where is your guitar?

Red Hot Rockin' Blues

RHRB was just finished in time for my October show at the Ft. Smith Art Center, October, 2008. The guitar images started emerging in the summer of '08 as I started listening to Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton and Sting. This music demanded lots of red. The curved lines are like vibrating strings, even broken strings. Structure is implied, but the energy is obvious..

This is an oil painting that has many layers of wet paint over dry, creating a rich texture, with warm colors over cool, creating a visual vibration. The music that I was listening with this painting was Mozart's Piano Sonatas.

World Rhythms

I love the fusion of music from the east and the west, like Yo Yo Ma's Silk Roads CD. There is a sense of friction and even impending collision in this painting. These shapes also imply percussion, reed and string instruments. The music was by Kitaro, a CD titled Asia.
